The 56GS line-up was the last mechanical series from Grand Seiko, mass-produced from 1970 to 1974 in a wide variety of models. The production process of the 56GS series was partially automated and used the 5646 28,800bph movement, which provided the right balance of accuracy and reliability. Grand Seiko had previously introduced higher precision models, with a movement speed of 36,000bph, but such high frequency can come at the expense of reliability.
 

this pristine Grand Seiko 56GS Ref.5641-7000. Also nicknamed Tamago 「たまご」 or Egg in Japan due to its pebble-shaped case, it is a pretty unique reference from the 56GS line-up.
 
You might think it's chunky at first glance but it is certainly not: The brushed casing and finely polished indexes and hands with a luminous white dial creates a delicate interplay of light that can only be fully appreciated by the person wearing it.
 
The dial is also presented without a date, thus improving its symmetry and, in communion with the perfectly polished indexes, making this reference profoundly elegant.
 
This "Tamago" is not only a pristine example but also tells a story: If you look at the case back, you'll notice it was custom engraved surrounding the medallion which states that Toshiba issued it to employees of the company who had completed 25 years of service. Gifting wristwatches was (and still is) a common practice by many companies in Japan and it was not only limited to Grand Seiko but other models as well.
