King Seiko 44KS 4420-9990 Chronometer

While many contemporary collectors may recognize Daini's second King Seiko, the 44 or 4402 King Seiko, due to the modern reissue SJE023, fewer are aware of the remarkable 4420-9990 that followed.

The King Seiko 4420-9990 was in production for roughly two years, a relatively short period. However, its popularity led to the creation of the Grand Seiko 4420-9000 in late 1963, marking the first movement shared between King Seiko and Grand Seiko. This distinctive case design was also later used for the Gold Cap Grand Seiko 4420-9990, showcasing its lasting influence.

This 44KS is a fascinating reference: Its case measures 36.5mm in diameter and 42.7mm in length, yet it appears larger, thanks to its chunky lugs and spacious, minimalist dial. The dial, a hallmark of high-end 1960s Seiko watches, is a classic silver/off-white, reminiscent of early King and Grand Seiko models. A unique feature of the 4420-9990 is its spear-tipped seconds hand, which is exclusive to this model.

The Ref.4420-9990 stands out prominently on the wrist. Thanks to its size, case design, and bezel-to-dial ratio, the watch appears notably large. Seiko enhanced this effect by using a relatively tall, flat acrylic crystal with angled sides. Despite these features, the watch maintains a reasonable thickness of roughly 11mm.

As an early example of the “Grammar of Design” philosophy, we're offering this immaculate King Seiko 4420-9990 for sale. Likely never used, it features a sharp case and still retains remnants of the protective film on the caseback. We've paired it with black alligator leather straps and its original buckle to maintain its authentic look from when it was first released.
