The story of Seiko's diving watch breakthroughs is certainly fascinating, and it all began with one pivotal reference. After "testing the waters" with the 50m SilverWave in 1961, Seiko embarked on developing its first true dive watch. This effort culminated in the release of the 150m 6217-8000, or 62MAS, in 1965. The name "62MAS" is derived from the 62 base caliber and its Auto[MA]tic [S]elfdater designation. The initial 8000 model had a brief production run and was soon succeeded by the 8001, which featured a larger crown and more prominent embossing on the case back markings.
Like the 8000, the early 8001 models featured Seiko's dolphin motif to denote water resistance. However, in 1967, this was replaced with horseshoe-style markings. Inside the watch is Seiko's 6217A 17-jewel movement, featuring a quickset function that makes it very convenient for daily use. This same movement was used in the first World Time model in 1964 and later laid the foundation for the 62GS.
Since we never had the chance to offer any 62MAS in the past, we wanted this to be the best example possible, requiring extensive travels around Japan and a great deal of patience. Dated from April 1966, this example is just perfect: unused with an immaculate lume, bezel, and case. It still retains its original blue sticker on the case back and comes paired with Tropic straps and price tag. For collectors, it doesn't get any better than this. It's like a time capsule waiting for a museum.
Since this diver is unused, it will be sold as is but all the features work flawlessly. Please let us know if you wish to service it before delivery.

The dial and hands are in immaculate condition, the lume is original and has no visible rotting or deterioration.
The caseback is immaculate with the blue protective sticker remaining with the dolphin logo clearly visible.
The glass is original and overall in good condition, one tiny scratch is observed leaving a small spot between 4 O'clock and the center. Some hairline scratches are also observed on a closer look but are not noticeable.
