1964 marked the resurgence of a post-war Japan onto the world stage as a first-rate economic power, most readily apparent in Tokyo hosting the Summer Olympics that same year. Seiko – despite having no prior experience in sports timing – was named the official timekeeper, and began research and development in preparation for the games in 1961.

As part of Seiko’s R&D, and to commemorate its upcoming role in the summer games, it developed several advanced wristwatches, large clocks for athletes and spectators, specialty devices like photo finish systems, optical triggers, remote control devices, and numerous sport-specific products.

The Seiko stopwatch we have to offer is the 1/5 sec. Split-Second Stopwatch accumulation.

This watch was part of the 89ST series of stopwatches and was one of the original models created for the Olympic timer evaluation. The stopwatch is started and stopped with the right pusher, the second hand is split and reset with the left pusher. The crown at the top is depressed to reset all hands.

A true iconic-historical piece from Seiko, finding them in such condition is a true challenge.
