That is how thin Seiko made this movement in 1969, and everything about this watch follows from that number.

U.T.D. stands for Ultra Thin Dress, and it was Seiko's statement that it could stand alongside the finest Swiss makers of ultra-thin watches, Piaget included. At its heart is the hand-wound Calibre 68A, a barrel-shaped movement just 1.98mm thick, developed by Daini Seikosha and made with techniques that pushed the limits of what Seiko could achieve at the time. Its successors, the 6810, 6870 and 6898, are still the foundation of the ultra-thin watches Seiko makes today.

Everything about the design serves that thinness. There is no seconds hand, only hours and minutes, and the case was given a slightly wider rim to emphasise how slim its sides are. Seiko then decorated the gold with a delicate pattern reserved for precious metals at the time, and repeated it on the dial, giving the watch the quiet luxury of a piece of jewellery.

This was never meant to be an everyday Seiko. In the 1969 Special Luxury Catalogue, the U.T.D. (Ref. 68-6000) was listed at 300,000 yen, more than four times the price of a King Seiko or Lord Marvel, and even more expensive than the now-legendary Astronomical Observatory Chronometer, which sold for 180,000 yen. It was the most expensive mechanical watch Seiko offered. In many ways it was also the beginning of the line of thinking that would later become Credor: Seiko's own high jewellery and haute horlogerie house, where the 68 family of movements lives on.

Today's offering is an early example from September 1969, the very first year of production, in 18K yellow gold with its original 18K buckle. The dial is a warm yellow-gold tone that shifts towards orange depending on the light, which makes it endlessly interesting on the wrist and very difficult to capture in photos. It has been serviced and runs at 0s/day.

For a collector of Japanese watchmaking, few pieces matter more. The Astron gets the headlines from 1969.
